Elephant table.
The Elephant Table, a folding, outdoor, coffee or occasional table.
Perfect to sit around with out stools or chairs; days in the park and festivals.
Folds flat for storage and transport.
Carried by a simple cross of material, reminiscent of the way in which Africans use material to carry babies.

Test rig for folding table.
After constructing a basic test rig of my folding table in Gambia, I've made another one to smooth out any problems before the finished piece.
Testing the table for strength, this clamp weighs about 15 KG and the table held up fine. As it's an occasional/coffee table it shouldn't ever have to deal with anything like this much weight.
The slot and hole system that gives the table strength.
Corners removed, this helps to stabilise the table as it means items cant be put in the corners which might cause the table to tip. The shape also reflects the shape created by feet when they overlap. The unusual shape is a welcome change from the normal right angle corner of most tables.

Election Poster for the Gaurdian.
Here's the election poster I'm entering for the Gaurdian Election poster compition.
Although I know who I'm voting for I don't feel strongly enough about any of the parties to promote or create a satire of them. What does annoy me though is when people complain about the government or local council but didn't take the time to vote. Tried to keep it as simple as possible, hope you like it.

Mom BBQ
After watching and helping fellow students build rocket stoves in
Gambia, these BBQs caught my attention. They aren't rocket stove as they burn coal and are in that sense a traditional BBQ, but the central stand does serve to pull oxygen into grill.
Looks beautifully made, as do their (very limited!) other products. Have a look .................. www.mom.eu/barbecue
I'm in the process of building my own rocket stove and BBQ (using similar techniques) in the back yard in preparation for the World Cup. Watch this space.

Looks brilliant, I probably wont have time to get down to it which is a real shame.

Exhibitions.
I'm going to be exhibiting my degree work in both Leeds and London over the summer.
In Leeds on the 10th June at Broadcasting House.
In London between the 8th and 11th of July at New Designers. www.newdesigners.com/ Which looks set to be a really exciting exhibition, and a look into the future of British design.

3D development.
Scale model made in the 3D Printer (Rapid prototype). Not the best photo, but gave me a good idea of how the finish product would look.
Then Vac formed, leaving foam encapsulated inside.
Because the foam is hand modeled each leg is very slightly different, which relates back to the way in which stools in Africa are carved. This causes an interesting hybrid of techniques and materials. The Legs will then be backed with wood for support. This means of construction may well not be used in the final product but serves as a 3d full scale realisation of my design.

Manifold Tables
Interesting range of furniture that made me have a second look. Not sure how practical some of the designs are and looks in some cases like the idea has been stretched a bit too far. But the simplicity in the idea has clarity that shines through.
This us just one of many, the whole range is at http://www.anthonyleyland.com/manifold_2/MAN2.002.html

Shine Chair.
My entry into the "Seat 4 Shine" competition has been shortlisted down to the last three. The competition will now run until later in the year giving me more time to develop the design and a real chance of seeing the piece being put into production as a one off. There are images earlier in the blog but here is a photo of the exhibition and a press release.
The Phoenix chair is inspired by the movement and elegance of The Phoenix dance company.
The simple curves give the seat a sculptural beauty, which is uniquely developed for the Shine building.
Table For Sandele.
I've been working on a variation of my folding table for the Eco resort Sandele which is where I stayed whilst in The Gambia. It's a simplified version, made from as few pieces as possible, and will hopefully be easy and cheap to construct. With no need for the folding element of the table this shouldn't be hard to achieve. This is the first CAD model with full scale mock ups coming shortly.

African inspired Furniture.
My work in the Gambia, took a slightly different than I'd first planned. The work I produced was influenced heavily by what I saw around me. My design style though is much more suited to a western environment and production techniques. I worked simultaneously on a set of stools and a folding table.
I'm now in the process of constructing the pieces and developing the designs.
